We do not offer bill-pay services at this time, nor do we manage Accounts Payable (AP) or Accounts Receivable (AR).

Payroll tax responsibility

Our bookkeepers can assist you in setting up your initial payroll service in QBO or Gusto. We are not responsible for entering payroll hours/salary, accruing payroll taxes, nor the transmittal of payroll taxes to the IRS or the state.  Your full-service payroll provider (QBO, Gusto, or whatever other service a client uses) will be the responsible party for payroll and payroll tax compliance.

*Payroll deductions and benefits

We provide assistance with setting up a payroll account in either Quickbooks Online or Gusto, including entry of employee data.  We do not assist in state registrations, benefits, or advise on deductions.  Those service areas are provided directly by either QBO or Gusto.

Preparation of W2s

Similar to the last item, your full-service payroll provider (QBO/Gusto) is responsible for preparation of Form W2 for employees.

Sales tax reporting

For those nonprofits that sell taxable goods and/or services, your bookkeeper will assist in accounting for sales taxes collected and transmitted, but we do not prepare state sales tax reports.

Donation recording

We do not provide individual donation data entry into your neither your donor CRM nor Quickbooks Online, nor do we prepare year-end donor acknowledgements.

Administrative tasks

We cannot provide administrative services unrelated to our bookkeeping function.

Attend board meetings

Due to the constraints of time and distance, we are unable to be present, physically nor virtually, at a meeting of a client’s board of directors.*May incur additional fee per 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC.

What We Don’t Do

Pay bills

We do not offer bill-pay services at this time, nor do we manage Accounts Payable (AP) or Accounts Receivable (AR).

Payroll tax responsibility

Our bookkeepers can assist you in setting up your initial payroll service in QBO or Gusto. We are not responsible for entering payroll hours/salary, accruing payroll taxes, nor the transmittal of payroll taxes to the IRS or the state.  Your full-service payroll provider (QBO, Gusto, or whatever other service a client uses) will be the responsible party for payroll and payroll tax compliance.

*Payroll deductions and benefits

We provide assistance with setting up a payroll account in either Quickbooks Online or Gusto, including entry of employee data.  We do not assist in state registrations, benefits, or advise on deductions.  Those service areas are provided directly by either QBO or Gusto.

Preparation of W2s

Similar to the last item, your full-service payroll provider (QBO/Gusto) is responsible for preparation of Form W2 for employees.

Sales tax reporting

For those nonprofits that sell taxable goods and/or services, your bookkeeper will assist in accounting for sales taxes collected and transmitted, but we do not prepare state sales tax reports.

Donation recording

We do not provide individual donation data entry into your neither your donor CRM nor Quickbooks Online, nor do we prepare year-end donor acknowledgements.

Administrative tasks

We cannot provide administrative services unrelated to our bookkeeping function.

Attend board meetings

Due to the constraints of time and distance, we are unable to be present, physically nor virtually, at a meeting of a client’s board of directors.*May incur additional fee per 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC.

Canada Upgrades Diplomatic Mission to Embassy in 2024

Phnom Penh, October 11, 2024 – Canada plans to elevate its diplomatic presence in Cambodia by upgrading its current office in Phnom Penh to a full embassy, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced during a bilateral meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summit in Laos on October 10.

Prime Minister Trudeau emphasized the growing strength of Canada-Cambodia relations, noting that the embassy upgrade marks a significant step in deepening diplomatic and economic ties.

“The leaders discussed the growing ties between the two countries, including the upgrade of Canada’s office in Phnom Penh to a full Canadian embassy,” Trudeau said.

As part of Canada’s broader Indo-Pacific Strategy, Prime Minister Trudeau also announced plans for a Team Canada Trade Mission to Cambodia in 2025. This initiative aims to enhance trade and investment opportunities with ASEAN member states, in anticipation of the conclusion of the ASEAN-Canada Free Trade Agreement, which has been under negotiation since 2021.

Prime Minister Hun Manet welcomed Canada’s continued engagement, highlighting its longstanding contributions to Cambodia’s peace building, development, and humanitarian efforts. He cited Canada’s early involvement in post-conflict recovery, including its support for demining operations and development aid in the 1990s.

Canada first deployed military personnel to Cambodia in 1954 as part of the International Commission for Supervision and Control under the Geneva Accords. Canadian Armed Forces later played a critical role in the UN peacekeeping mission beginning in 1991, with the last contingent departing in 1993 following the conclusion of the UN Transitional Authority in Cambodia. Between 1994 and 2000, over 60 Canadian personnel participated in demining and ordnance removal efforts, a mission that remains active today under UN oversight.

Economically, the two nations have expanded their commercial relationship in recent years. In 2023, Canadian direct investment in Cambodia reached $1.6 billion, while bilateral trade amounted to $2.1 billion, slightly down from $2.4 billion in 2022. Notably, Canadian exports to Cambodia rose from $33.3 million in 2022 to $37.2 million in 2023. Cambodian exports to Canada have also followed an upward trend since 2002, reaching $2.4 billion in 2022. Major Canadian exports to Cambodia include vehicles, aircraft parts, furskins, and industrial equipment, while imports primarily consist of garments, footwear, and textiles.

Prime Minister Hun Manet reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to economic reform, “Cambodia has launched many in-depth reform programs to meet the needs and requests of the private sector, including improving the investment climate to be more favourable as well as launching incentives to help the sector grow even more.” Hun Manet said.

Our bookkeepers can assist you in setting up your initial payroll service in QBO or Gusto. We are not responsible for entering payroll hours/salary, accruing payroll taxes, nor the transmittal of payroll taxes to the IRS or the state.  Your full-service payroll provider (QBO, Gusto, or whatever other service a client uses) will be the responsible party for payroll and payroll tax compliance.

*Payroll deductions and benefits

We provide assistance with setting up a payroll account in either Quickbooks Online or Gusto, including entry of employee data.  We do not assist in state registrations, benefits, or advise on deductions.  Those service areas are provided directly by either QBO or Gusto.

Preparation of W2s

Similar to the last item, your full-service payroll provider (QBO/Gusto) is responsible for preparation of Form W2 for employees.

Sales tax reporting

For those nonprofits that sell taxable goods and/or services, your bookkeeper will assist in accounting for sales taxes collected and transmitted, but we do not prepare state sales tax reports.

Donation recording

We do not provide individual donation data entry into your neither your donor CRM nor Quickbooks Online, nor do we prepare year-end donor acknowledgements.

Administrative tasks

We cannot provide administrative services unrelated to our bookkeeping function.

Attend board meetings

Due to the constraints of time and distance, we are unable to be present, physically nor virtually, at a meeting of a client’s board of directors.*May incur additional fee per 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC.

New Path to Permanent Residency for Undocumented Workers in Canada

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

A new avenue to permanent resident status is in the works for undocumented workers in Canada, as a program under the federal government continues developing. This new program is meant to tackle the “underground economy” of undocumented workers living in Canada, many of whom are former legal residents who have since lost their status. There are as many as 500 000 undocumented workers currently living in Canada, often working exploitive jobs in construction, cleaning, caregiving, and agriculture. This new immigration pathway would allow them to regain their status, allowing them to continue to build their lives in Canada. Continue reading to learn more about what this new program could mean for undocumented workers.

Development of the program follows a letter to the immigration minister directing them to explore more ways to regularize undocumented residents. While it is too early to know exactly how many undocumented workers would be granted PR status in this new program, it will build on previous small-scale initiatives that have helped undocumented construction workers obtain PR status in Canada. The introduction of this program would also follow similar programs allowing international students to regain status after their credentials expired during the pandemic. While the new program is also likely to focus on workers in specific sectors, versus a broader, over-arching approach, it is set to assist many people in regaining or achieving legal status.

Research and consultations on the program took place this summer, with advocates urging Ottawa to adopt a more extensive program to meet the needs of migrants, as well as those of the Canadian economy. Regularization of undocumented workers could greatly benefit the Canadian economy, potentially bringing in an additional $1 billion dollars in income tax, as well as increase contributions to EI and CPP. Addressing this “shadow economy” would help to address record-high job vacancies currently being experienced in many industries throughout Canada, a major benefit to the economy and local businesses.

Not only would this program benefit the economy, but it would also greatly improve the lives of undocumented workers themselves. Most undocumented workers came to Canada legally but lost their status due to issues with student visas, temporary work permits, or asylum claims. Currently, undocumented workers in Canada face a range of vulnerabilities, including poor mental and physical health due to social isolation, abusive working conditions, and reduced access to care. Allowing these workers to gain legal status would bring workers out of situations where wage theft and abuse are common, while making healthcare and social services more accessible.

While the program is still in development, it is clear that strides are being made towards a more easily navigated, accessible system for undocumented workers in Canada. If you are an undocumented worker who is looking to gain permanent resident status in Canada.

What We Don’t Do

Pay bills

We do not offer bill-pay services at this time, nor do we manage Accounts Payable (AP) or Accounts Receivable (AR).

Payroll tax responsibility

Our bookkeepers can assist you in setting up your initial payroll service in QBO or Gusto. We are not responsible for entering payroll hours/salary, accruing payroll taxes, nor the transmittal of payroll taxes to the IRS or the state.  Your full-service payroll provider (QBO, Gusto, or whatever other service a client uses) will be the responsible party for payroll and payroll tax compliance.

*Payroll deductions and benefits

We provide assistance with setting up a payroll account in either Quickbooks Online or Gusto, including entry of employee data.  We do not assist in state registrations, benefits, or advise on deductions.  Those service areas are provided directly by either QBO or Gusto.

Preparation of W2s

Similar to the last item, your full-service payroll provider (QBO/Gusto) is responsible for preparation of Form W2 for employees.

Sales tax reporting

For those nonprofits that sell taxable goods and/or services, your bookkeeper will assist in accounting for sales taxes collected and transmitted, but we do not prepare state sales tax reports.

Donation recording

We do not provide individual donation data entry into your neither your donor CRM nor Quickbooks Online, nor do we prepare year-end donor acknowledgements.

Administrative tasks

We cannot provide administrative services unrelated to our bookkeeping function.

Attend board meetings

Due to the constraints of time and distance, we are unable to be present, physically nor virtually, at a meeting of a client’s board of directors.*May incur additional fee per 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC.

Why Canada is Changing Immigration Rules?

These updates were introduced to ensure that Canada’s International Student Program remains secure, equitable, and efficient in accommodating the growing number of applicants. As global demand rises, these changes help maintain the high standard of the student experience while ensuring Canada’s ability to support its international students. 

Canada continues to be a leading destination for students worldwide, known for its top-tier education, clear pathways to permanent residency (PR), and welcoming, multicultural society. However, we recognize that these updates will have a significant impact on many current international students and those planning to study here in the future.

UPDATES

Here are the key updates for 2025

  1. Changes to open work permits for family members of temporary residents: Effective January 21, 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is changing open work permit (OWP) eligibility for family members of international students and foreign workers. Only spouses of certain international students and foreign workers will be able to apply for a family OWP. Family OWPs will be limited to spouses of international students who are enrolled in:
    • master’s programs that are 16 months or longer
    • doctoral programs, or
    • select professional and eligible programs
    • Family OWPs will also be limited to spouses of foreign workers who are employed in
      • TEER 0 or 1 occupations, or
      • select TEER 2 or 3 occupations in sectors with labour shortages or linked to government priorities. These include occupations in the natural and applied sciences, construction, health care, natural resources, education, sports and military sectors. Please check the IRCC website for the full list which will be available on January 21, 2025.
  2. New International Student Program regulations
    From November 15, 2024, eligible international students can work up to 24 hours per week off campus while their classes are in session. Moving forward, international students must apply and be approved for a new study permit before changing learning institutions. To work off campus without a work permit, international students must be studying full-time in a post-secondary academic, vocational or professional training program, or a vocational training program at the secondary level offered in Quebec that lasts at least six months and leads to a degree, diploma or certificate. International students who are eligible to work off campus may work full-time during breaks in their academic calendar, such as the summer break between school years or the winter break between semesters.   3. Field of Study Requirement
    Starting November 1, 2024, new rules will apply to some international students applying for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) in Canada. To qualify, students must graduate from programs that prepare them for jobs in industries facing long-term worker shortages in Canada. These jobs fall under five categories: agriculture and agri-food, healthcare, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), trade, and transport. This ensures international graduates are ready for industries that need skilled workers. The IRCC now has a handy tool for looking up fields of study. (Canada.ca)
  4. Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL)
    Starting January 22, 2024, most new post-secondary students will need to include a provincial attestation letter with their study permit applications. This ensures the student is accounted for within the province’s allocated number of study permits. Applications submitted before January 22, 2024, or those already approved are exempt. ​ (Canada.ca)​.
  5. Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Updates
    From February 15, 2024, graduates of master’s programs (even if under two years) can qualify for a three-year PGWP, allowing them more time to gain Canadian work experience, a crucial step toward applying for permanent residency (PR). (Canada.ca)​.
  6. Public-Private Partnership Colleges
    Students graduating from public-private partnership college programs will no longer be eligible for a PGWP. This change aims to improve the quality of education and student support at these institutions​ (Canada.ca)​.
  7. Work Permit Eligibility for Spouses
    Eligibility for open work permits will be limited to the spouses and common-law partners of students in graduate (master’s and doctorate) and professional degree-granting programs. Spouses and common-law partners of undergraduate and college students will no longer be eligible unless they already hold an open work permit​ (Canada.ca)​.
  8. Off-Campus Work Hours
    The temporary policy allowing international students to work more than 20 hours per week off-campus ended on April 30, 2024. Now students will be allowed to work up to 24 hours per week during the academic session. During scheduled academic breaks, students can continue to work unlimited hours​ (Canada.ca)​.
  9. Study Permit Caps
    For 2024, the IRCC has implemented a national cap of 552,000 study permit applications, with approximately 292,000 expected to be approved. This is a 28% reduction from 2023 for the groups included under the cap​ (Canada.ca)​.
  10. Enhanced Verification Process
    As of December 1, 2023, designated learning institutions must confirm each applicant’s letter of acceptance directly with IRCC. This measure is designed to protect students from fraud and ensure genuine letters of acceptance​ (Canada.ca)​.

Additional Reforms

Additional Reforms in 2025-2026:

  • International Student Caps
    Canada will reduce the number of study permits issued, aiming for 437,000 permits in 2025. Over three years, this will result in about 300,000 fewer permits.
  • Attestation Letters
    Master’s and doctoral students will need to provide a provincial or territorial attestation letter to qualify for study permits. 12% of permit spots will be reserved for these students.
  • Post-Graduation Work Permits (PGWP)
    New language requirements will be introduced in November 2024. University graduates must meet a Canada Language Benchmark (CLB) of 7, while college graduates need a CLB of 5.  Graduates from programs at public colleges will remain eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) of up to three years if they graduate from a field of study linked to occupations in long-term shortage. These changes will result in 175,000 fewer PGWPs over three years.
  • Spousal Work Permits
    Only spouses of students in doctoral or specific master’s programs will be eligible for work permits. For temporary foreign workers, work permits will be limited to spouses of highly skilled workers or those in sectors with critical labour shortages. This will lead to 150,000 fewer work permits for spouses over the next three years.

  3. Extended Post-Graduation Work Permits (PGWP)
    Graduates of certain master’s programs, even those shorter than 2 years, can receive a three-year PGWP, providing more time to gain work experience and apply for PR.
  4. Better Student Experience for International Students
    Schools with high standards of student services will benefit from quicker processing times for their students.

CHALLENGE AND CHANGE

Upcoming Challenges: 

  1. Limited Work Permit Eligibility for Spouses
    Only spouses of graduate students will qualify for work permits, which could strain families financially if both partners previously worked.
  2. Reduced Access to Public-Private Colleges
    Students graduating from public-private partnership colleges will no longer be eligible for a PGWP, which could limit their ability to work in Canada after graduation.  If a student is not able to work in Canada, then this also has implications for any PR application they would wish to submit.
  3. Tighter Caps on Study Permits
    Canada will cap the number of study permits issued, starting in 2024. This reduced intake may make it more competitive for prospective students to enter Canadian institutions, potentially delaying or limiting opportunities for new student
  4. Higher Language and Financial Requirements
    New language proficiency standards for PGWP applicants and updated cost-of-living requirements may increase the difficulty of meeting study or immigration eligibility criteria, adding financial and academic pressures for some students.

Overall, these changes create a balance of more work opportunities and stronger protections, but they also introduce new restrictions on work permits for spouses and fewer study permit approvals. International students and their families will need to carefully navigate these updates to make the most of their educational and professional opportunities in Canada.
